Bingo and Breakopen

 Bingo and Breakopen

Bingo is a charitable lottery system that is played in a facility like a hall, legion, or facility. It involves the sale of one or more bingo papers or cards to a group of players and then random calling numbers on the bingo papers or cards. Players are required to follow a predetermined pattern using the numbers called on the bingo cards and papers. The player who completes the required pattern correctly in the given time is declared the winner.

A breakopen is a charitable lottery system that offers a certain set of prizes through the sale of a pre-determined amount of covered tickets. The combination of symbols that shows when the cover was removed determines who the winner(s).

Any bingo event that has a price to play requires a license. The only bingo event that does not require a licence is free bingo. These bingo events offer a completely free game, with no entry fees or donations. They are open to everyone who wishes to play.

Only religious and charitable organisations can host a bingo or breakopen party. These types of organizations are licensed by the LGCA to host bingo and breakopen events, in accordance with Section 207(1) (b) of Canada's Criminal Code. The eligibility guide of the LGCA (click here) will help you determine if your organization is eligible for a license. The organization must submit background information if it has not been licensed before or has not held a license in the last three years.

All bingo and breakopen events require a license regardless of expected revenue or how profits are used. A license is required for all bingo and breakopen events.
